Roundup · On the Water

The best action camera for fishing

By Janet H.

Published October 17, 2026

Fishing is long, static and wet, and the fish arrives when you are not looking. Runtime and the mount decide this, not resolution.

A kayaker in rapids, with an action camera mounted on their helmet

The short answer

The GoPro HERO13 Black is the best action camera for fishing for most people — 33ft (10m) of bare water rating, a 1900mAh removable Enduro battery that GoPro rates for full functionality down to 14°F (-10°C), and a mount catalog deep enough to put a camera on a rail, a gunwale, a bow or your chest without adapters. Take the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro instead if your sessions run long, because DJI publishes 240 minutes of recording and 20m of bare depth, and take the Insta360 X5 if you fish alone and cannot stop to frame a shot. Whichever body you pick, the mount matters more than the camera: a fishing camera that cannot see the rod tip and the water in the same frame has recorded nothing worth keeping.

Scores are our editorial judgment from published specs and named independent reviews, weighted for lake and trail use — not measurements. We have not tested these units and do not own them.

02

How we picked

We do not lab-test, bench-test or dive-test cameras, and we do not own test units. What we do instead is read the manufacturer's published specifications, read the independent reviews that genuinely do test, read owner reports for the failure modes specs never mention — fogging, salt corrosion, cold battery collapse, mount slippage — and then weight all of it for action cameras used on lake and trail. Where a number is not published, the page says “not published” rather than filling the cell.

The full method, including what we refuse to do, is on the editorial policy page.

What actually decides a fishing camera

Fishing is not an action sport in the sense the category was designed for. There is no sustained motion to stabilize and no helmet to bolt to. What there is instead is time: hours of nothing, then four seconds that matter, usually with both of your hands busy. That changes which specifications count.

Runtime, first. You cannot predict when the fish arrives, so the camera has to be running when it does — or has to be the kind you can start one-handed. DJI publishes 240 minutes for the Osmo Action 5 Pro at 1080p/24, Insta360 publishes 185 minutes for the X5 in Endurance mode, and GoPro publishes 2.5 hours at 1080p30 for the HERO13 Black. Those are manufacturer figures under their own conditions, and a cold morning takes a bite out of all three.

The mount, second and nearly as important. The shot that reads as fishing is rod tip, water, hands. That is an arm with height and reach, not a camera stuck flat to a deck looking at the sky. A boom or pole arm gets the camera outboard and above the rail; a chest mount gets the hands and the reel; a bar clamp gets the rod butt and the net.

Bare water rating, third. Not because you are diving, but because a fishing camera meets water in uncontrolled ways — a wave over the bow, a net lifted over the lens, a camera knocked into eighteen inches of lake while you unhook something. 10m bare is enough; a housing is not necessary unless you want a release shot from below the surface. How deep an action camera really goes has every published rating in one table.

Float and tether, fourth, and not optional. Rods, pliers, phones and cameras all go over the side eventually. A float turns that into a story and a tether turns it into a non-event. Floats, tethers and not losing your camera is twenty dollars of insurance on a four-hundred-dollar body.

Three fishing situations, three different answers

From a kayak. Deck space is the constraint and everything has to be leashed, because a kayak that rolls takes your whole rig with it. The arm matters more here than anywhere else, and the kayak-specific version of this page — the best action camera for kayak fishing — goes into the deck layout and the track fittings in detail.

From a boat. You have power, space and a rail, which makes a clamp or a suction mount the obvious fixing and takes battery anxiety off the table if the camera can charge while recording. The boating roundup covers hull vibration, the rail-versus-windscreen question and what a 150+ mph suction rating actually means.

From the bank, or wading a river. This is the one case where a chest mount beats every arm on the market: you are moving, both hands are on the rod, and there is nothing to clamp to. A chest harness gives the hands-and-water angle that fly fishing footage lives on, and it keeps the camera out of the mud when you kneel.

Salt, slime and the end of the day

Fishing is harder on a camera than paddling is, because what gets on it is not just water. Fish slime, bait oil and sunscreen all leave a film that dries to a haze on the lens, and salt water does lasting damage to the parts you cannot see — the door seal, the battery contacts, the microphone drains.

The routine is short: rinse in fresh water before anything dries, with the door shut, then open it only once the outside is dry. Do not rinse a camera that has been in salt water with the battery door open, and do not leave it to dry in direct sun on a hot deck. Salt water care and rinsing has the full version, including what to do when you have already made the mistake.

What to ignore

8K. A fishing clip ends up on a phone or a television. 4K/30 is already more than either shows, the files are a fraction of the size, and the battery lasts longer.

Underwater "fish finder" cameras. A tethered drop camera and an action camera are different products solving different problems. If you want to watch fish behavior under the boat, that is a drop camera; nothing on this page replaces one, and we would rather say so.

Voice control. It works in a quiet room, not on a windy lake with an outboard running, and a camera that sometimes starts is worse than one that never does.

Pick 01 · Action camera

GoPro HERO13 Black

GoPro

The safest default for lake and trail: 33ft without a housing, the steadiest footage in the category, and a mount for literally everything.

Best for
Anyone who wants one camera to handle the kayak, the bike and the family trip

Top pick because fishing punishes the two things GoPro is strongest on: mounting and spares. The built-in folding fingers plus a 1/4-20 thread mean the camera fits a track mount, a rail clamp, a chest harness and a tripod with nothing bought in between, and the removable Enduro battery means a dead camera is a thirty-second swap in the boat rather than the end of the session.

33ft (10m) bare covers everything that happens to a fishing camera short of a dive — rain, spray, a dunk off the gunwale, a landing net full of lake. The replaceable lens cover is the quietly important part: the front of a fishing camera meets sinkers, jig heads and a rod butt, and a scratch is a $20 problem instead of a $400 one. Its honest limit is that 33ft is the shallowest of the three flagships, and anything below it wants the separate Protective Housing.

Pros

  • HyperSmooth 6.0 with AutoBoost is the steadiest stabilization we can find published figures for
  • Built-in mounting fingers plus 1/4-20 threads — it fits the GoPro ecosystem and a normal tripod
  • Enduro battery is rated to keep full camera functionality down to 14°F (-10°C)
  • Replaceable lens cover, so a scratched lens is a $20 problem and not a $400 one

Cons

  • 33ft is shallower than the DJI and it is the shallowest of the three flagships
  • Anything past 33ft needs the separate Protective Housing
  • HB-Series lenses and ND filters are all extra purchases

Pick 02 · Action camera

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro

DJI

Goes to 20m with no housing at all and publishes a 240-minute runtime — the two numbers that decide a long, wet, cold day.

Best for
Long paddles, cold water, and anyone tired of buying a housing to get past 10m

The pick when the day is long, which fishing days are. DJI publishes 240 minutes at 1080p/24 with the screens off, the longest runtime figure in this set, and a -20° to 45°C operating range that covers a frozen morning on the bank as well as a July pontoon. 20m bare is double the HERO13 Black's rating, so wading, a dropped camera in the shallows and a quick underwater release shot are all inside spec with no housing.

The cost is 146g — the heaviest flagship here, which you feel on a long pole or a light rod-mounted arm — and a smaller mount catalog where magnetic quick-release adapters are their own purchase. If you already own a drawer of GoPro hardware, factor the adapters in.

Pros

  • 20m without the Waterproof Case — double the bare-camera depth of the HERO13 Black
  • DJI publishes 240 minutes of recording at 1080p/24 with screens off, the longest figure in this set
  • Rated to -20°C, which matters more on an October lake than any resolution number
  • 1/1.3-inch sensor holds detail when the light goes flat

Cons

  • Mount ecosystem is smaller than GoPro's, and magnetic quick-release adapters are their own purchase
  • 146g — the heaviest of the flagship three
  • Fewer third-party mounts and filters exist for it

Pick 03 · Mount

YakAttack PanFish Pro Camera Mount

YakAttack

Aluminum, 33 inches tall, mounts to almost every kayak track system, and floats if you drop it in.

Best for
Kayak fishing, where the camera has to see the rod tip and the water

Not a camera, and the pick that changes the footage most. A fishing camera has one hard job — hold the rod tip, the water and your hands in one frame — and a 33in articulating arm on a LockNLoad base with 360-degree rotation is how that frame gets built. It carries a GoPro interface plus a 1/4-20 adapter, so any body on this page bolts straight on.

It wants a track or a gear base to mount into, which is a kayak or a rigged boat rather than a bank seat. If your boat has a rail or a bar instead, a clamp mount is the equivalent answer, and track vs clamp vs suction compares the three fixings honestly.

Pros

  • Rigid aluminum construction specifically to reduce camera shake
  • LockNLoad base gives full 360-degree rotation while staying locked to the track
  • Compatible with YakAttack MightyMounts and GearTrac plus most Scotty, RAM and YakGear tracks
  • Made from marine-grade materials, and it floats if it goes over

Cons

  • FeelFree, 3 Waters and Jonny Boat kayaks need a separate adapter
  • 33 inches is a lot of mast in a crosswind
  • Costs noticeably more than a plain track mount

Pick 04 · 360 camera

Insta360 X5

Insta360

15m rated, replaceable lenses, and the one camera that means you never have to aim while you are paddling.

Best for
Anyone filming themselves on the water who cannot stop to frame a shot

The solo-angler answer. A 360 camera records the whole sphere and you choose the angle afterwards, which means the fish that takes while the camera points at your knees is still a usable clip. IP68 to 49ft (15m) is the deepest bare rating of any camera on this site, the lenses are user-replaceable, and Insta360 publishes 185 minutes in Endurance mode at 5.7K24 — long enough for a session rather than a cast.

Two honest costs. Every clip needs a reframing pass before anyone else can watch it, which is real work at the end of a long day, and the exposed lenses live inches from the business end of a fishing rod — lens guards are a purchase, not an option. If you fish with someone who can hold a camera, a flat body is less work.

Pros

  • 15m IP68 is the deepest bare rating of any camera on this site
  • User-replaceable lenses — the single biggest fix for the 360 format's worst failure mode
  • 185 minutes in Endurance mode at 5.7K24, which is a whole day of clips
  • Invisible-selfie-stick reframing means you point the camera at nothing and pick the angle later

Cons

  • Exposed lenses still scratch; lens guards are a purchase, not an option
  • Every clip needs a reframing pass before anyone else can watch it
  • 8K30 files are large and the edit is slower than flat footage

AKASO Brave 8 Lite

AKASO

Two batteries and a bag of mounts in the box at a fraction of flagship money — buy it knowing the stabilization gives up first.

Best for
A pool, a calm lake, a first camera you are not precious about

The pick for a camera you are genuinely not precious about, which has a place in a boat full of hooks and slime. It is IPX8 to 10m bare, ships with two 1550mAh batteries, a charger and seven mounts, and uses GoPro-standard two-prong mounting so the rest of the accessory world fits. SuperSmooth stabilization is a step behind HyperSmooth and RockSteady when the hull is slapping, and low light is where the price shows most — so buy it for a calm lake and a bright morning, not for a river mouth at dawn.

Pros

  • IPX8 to 10m bare, which matches the HERO13 Black's rating on paper
  • Ships with two batteries, a charger and seven mounts — nothing else to buy on day one
  • 4K60 and dual screens at a price well under the flagships
  • Uses GoPro-standard two-prong mounting, so the whole accessory world fits

Cons

  • SuperSmooth stabilization is a step behind HyperSmooth and RockSteady in chop
  • The 60m rating belongs to the separate housing, not the camera
  • Low light is where the price shows most

What decides this category

Buy the arm at the same time as the camera

The gap between forgettable fishing footage and the clip you show someone is almost entirely the mount. Budget for the arm or the clamp in the same purchase, not next season.

Two batteries, or a body that charges while recording

Sessions outlast every published runtime figure once it is cold. A removable battery is the cheap fix; a power bank and a camera that records while charging is the other one — power on long days covers which bodies allow it.

A float, and a leash to the boat

Two separate items doing two separate jobs: the float keeps it on the surface, the leash keeps it attached to you. On moving water you want both.

What we would skip

Bundles padded with a dozen plastic adapters and an unbranded telescopic pole. The pole in those kits is the part that fails, usually while extended over the water with the camera on the end.

05

Questions people actually ask

01What is the best action camera for fishing?

The GoPro HERO13 Black for most anglers — 33ft bare, a removable Enduro battery and the deepest mount catalog. The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is the pick for long or cold sessions on its published 240-minute runtime and 20m bare rating, and the Insta360 X5 is the pick if you fish alone and cannot stop to frame.

02Where should I mount an action camera for fishing?

Somewhere that sees the rod tip, the water and your hands in one frame — which usually means an articulating arm on a track or a clamp on a rail, set above and slightly outboard of where you sit. A camera flat on the deck films the sky; a chest mount is the answer when you are wading or on the bank.

03Do I need a waterproof housing to film fishing?

No. Every camera on this page is rated for water on its own, from IPX8 10m to 20m, which covers rain, spray and a dunk. A housing only becomes necessary if you want shots from well below the surface, and it brings a fogging risk with it.

04What is the best camera for kayak fishing specifically?

The same bodies, but the rigging changes completely — track fittings, deck space and leashing everything. We cover that separately on the kayak fishing roundup.

05How long will the battery last on a fishing trip?

Less than the published figure, especially in the cold. Manufacturers publish 240 minutes for the Osmo Action 5 Pro at 1080p/24 and 2.5 hours at 1080p30 for the HERO13 Black, both under their own conditions. Plan on a spare battery or a power bank for a full day.
