How we picked
We do not lab-test, bench-test or dive-test cameras, and we do not own test units. What we do instead is read the manufacturer's published specifications, read the independent reviews that genuinely do test, read owner reports for the failure modes specs never mention — fogging, salt corrosion, cold battery collapse, mount slippage — and then weight all of it for action cameras used on lake and trail. Where a number is not published, the page says “not published” rather than filling the cell.

Why most family trip footage never gets watched
It is worth being blunt about this, because it is the actual problem and no camera on this page solves it.
A week's holiday shot the usual way produces three or four hours of footage. Almost all of it is continuous takes of a place: the walk to the beach, the boat leaving the harbour, forty minutes of a pool. Nothing happens in any of it, and there is far too much to sit down with. So it goes onto a drive and nobody opens it again.
The fix is a habit, not a purchase. Film in short deliberate bursts — thirty to ninety seconds — at the moments you would describe to somebody afterwards. Not the whole boat trip: the moment the kids see the turtle. Not the whole walk: the bit with the view.

The size question, and why it decides everything
On a family trip the camera competes with a bag already full of towels, snacks, sun cream and somebody else's shoes. A camera that requires a decision to bring will lose that argument several times a week.
This is why the Insta360 GO Ultra ranks where it does despite a shorter specification sheet than the cameras around it. 53 grams clipped to a strap gets used on days a 150-gram camera does not, and footage that exists beats footage that would have been slightly sharper.
If you are choosing between a flagship and something smaller, be honest about how much you will carry.
Water, because family holidays are wet
Pools, sea, water parks, boat trips, rain. Almost every family holiday involves water, and it is where cameras get dropped, handed over and left on wet surfaces.
Two things follow. Take the depth rating seriously — a 5m rating is genuinely limiting for a pool-and-snorkel week, and 10m or better means nobody has to be careful. Battery and cards, for a week away
Two practical notes that save holidays.
Take more card than you think. A 128GB card is a comfortable week at 4K if you shoot in bursts, and an uncomfortable two days if you do not. Cards are cheap; the moment you have to start deleting things on a beach is not.
Charge everything at night, every night. Obvious, and the most common reason a camera is dead at the moment something happens. A camera with a removable battery plus two spares is easier to live with on a trip than a built-in battery plus a power bank, because swapping takes ten seconds and charging takes an hour.
What about a phone?
A modern phone shoots excellent video and is already in your pocket. For most family holiday moments it is genuinely the right tool, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

What decides this category
Weight, honestly assessed
The camera that comes with you produces all the footage. If the difference between two cameras is 100 grams and one of them will stay in the room, the lighter one is better regardless of its sensor.
A screen you can see yourself in
Front screens and flip screens sound like vlogger features and are genuinely useful on a family trip, where you are in the shot far more often than you expect.
Depth rating for a wet week
10m or better means nobody has to be careful — at a pool, in the sea, on a boat. 5m is fine for splashing and limiting for anything else.
Simple enough to hand over
One button to record, obvious controls, and a body that survives being dropped on tile. This is a real buying criterion on a family trip and almost nobody lists it.
What we would skip
A 360 camera, unless you genuinely enjoy editing — the reframing pass on every clip is a lot to take on while also being on holiday. And skip the twenty-piece bundle; a float, a card, a spare battery and a grip is the whole kit.

Questions people actually ask
01Is an action camera better than a phone for family holidays?
For water, mounting, sand and handing to children, yes. For everything else a phone is genuinely fine and already with you. Most families end up using both, which is the right answer.
02How much memory card do I need for a week away?
128GB is comfortable at 4K if you shoot in short bursts, and tight if you record continuously. Take two cards rather than one large one — a failed card should not cost you the whole trip.
03Can kids use an action camera?
Easily, and the footage is often the best you bring home. Give them a floating grip with a wrist strap, set it to one mode, and accept the framing.
04What depth rating do I need for a pool and beach holiday?
10m or better, which covers the pool floor, snorkeling and anyone dropping it off a boat. A 5m rating works but requires everyone to be careful, which on holiday nobody is.
05Why does my holiday footage look boring?
Because there is too much of it and it is all from one position. Thirty-second clips, a second angle and letting other people hold the camera fix it almost entirely — none of which costs anything.
