The best GoPro for family vacations
There are two current GoPros, and the choice between them takes one paragraph. The rest of the decision is what you put it on and how you keep it powered.

The GoPro HERO13 Black is the best GoPro for a family vacation — 33ft (10m) of depth with no housing, a swappable 1900mAh Enduro battery, and the mount ecosystem that lets one camera cover the pool, the kayak, the bike and the rental car. Buy the much cheaper GoPro HERO (2024) instead if the trip is pools, splash pads and dry land, and nobody needs to swap a battery mid-day: it is 46% lighter, simple enough to hand to anybody, and its 16ft (5m) rating is the one specification that decides it.

Scores are our editorial judgment from published specs and named independent reviews, weighted for lake and trail use — not measurements. We have not tested these units and do not own them.
02
How we picked
We do not lab-test, bench-test or dive-test cameras, and we do not own test units. What we do instead is read the manufacturer's published specifications, read the independent reviews that genuinely do test, read owner reports for the failure modes specs never mention — fogging, salt corrosion, cold battery collapse, mount slippage — and then weight all of it for action cameras used on lake and trail. Where a number is not published, the page says “not published” rather than filling the cell.
The full method, including what we refuse to do, is on the editorial policy page.

The model choice, settled
GoPro's current lineup is smaller than the internet makes it look. Two bodies are sold new, and the decision between them comes down to two numbers.
| HERO13 Black | HERO (2024) | |
|---|---|---|
| Waterproof, no housing | 33ft (10m) | 16ft (5m) |
| Battery | 1900mAh Enduro, removable | Built in, not user-removable |
| Published runtime | 1.5h at 5.3K30 / 2.5h at 1080p30 | Not published in the same form |
| Video ceiling | 5.3K | 4K30 |

| Mounts | Built-in fingers plus 1/4-20 thread | Built-in fingers, 35+ mounts listed |
If the trip involves real water — snorkeling, a boat, a lake — take the HERO13 Black. The depth rating and the swappable battery are both trip-critical and neither is recoverable with an accessory. If the trip is pools, cities, beaches and bike paths, take the HERO (2024) and put the difference into a chest mount, a spare card and a float.
What a vacation actually does to a camera
Trip footage fails in a small number of predictable ways, and none of them are about which model you bought.
The camera stays in the bag. Far and away the most common failure. A camera that has to be taken out, turned on and aimed gets used three times on day one and never again. A camera already on a chest harness or a hat gets used all week. Buy the mount before you buy the better body.
It dies at lunchtime. Published runtimes are measured at modest settings with the screens off. Real use — 4K, preview on, repeated starts and stops — is shorter. One spare battery, or a power bank for the HERO (2024), ends the problem.
It records forty minutes of nothing. A pocket press on the shutter, and now you have a clip of the inside of a bag and a flat battery. Lock the camera when it is stowed.
Nobody ever watches it. Two hundred clips is not a video, and this is the real failure. The fix is to shoot fewer, longer, deliberate clips and to cut them down the same week — there is a method in editing a trip video people watch.
The packing list that makes the difference
For a week away, with a GoPro either way, this is the whole kit and it fits in a sandwich bag.
Two cards, not one. Cards fail and cards fill. A V30-rated card is the floor for 4K — which cards are safe covers the specifics, and the one-sentence version is that a slow card is the usual reason a recording stops on its own.
One spare battery, or a power bank. As above.
One chest mount and one clamp. Which is the Sports Kit.
A float. Always.
A microfiber cloth. Unglamorous and it fixes the single most common ruined shot: a water droplet on the lens that nobody noticed for twenty minutes. Wipe the front before every clip near water.
Settings to set once and leave
4K/30 for almost everything — it is more than any television in a rental house will show, it is half the file size of 5.3K, and it leaves battery on the table for the afternoon. 1080p/120 when somebody is jumping into something, because slow motion is the one effect that always survives an edit. Stabilization on and left alone. If the trip is on water, there is a settings page specifically for it: best settings for water.

GoPro HERO13 Black
GoPro
The safest default for lake and trail: 33ft without a housing, the steadiest footage in the category, and a mount for literally everything.
Anyone who wants one camera to handle the kayak, the bike and the family trip
The one to buy for a trip you have been planning for months, and the reason is the two specifications a vacation actually exercises. 33ft (10m) bare means snorkeling, pool bottoms and jumping off a boat all happen without a housing, which is one less thing to pack and one less O-ring to get wrong. And the 1900mAh Enduro battery is removable, so a dead camera at 2pm is a thirty-second swap rather than the end of the afternoon — on a trip, that difference is the whole argument.
Two more things earn their place on a family trip specifically. HyperSmooth 6.0 is the steadiest stabilization we can find published figures for, which matters because almost all vacation footage is shot walking, and walking footage is what people delete. And the lens cover is replaceable, so the sand that will absolutely get on the front of this camera is a $20 part and not a ruined camera.
Against it: 33ft is the shallowest of the three flagship action cameras — the DJI goes to 20m bare — so if your trip is a diving trip, the Protective Housing is a required purchase rather than an optional one.
- HyperSmooth 6.0 with AutoBoost is the steadiest stabilization we can find published figures for
- Built-in mounting fingers plus 1/4-20 threads — it fits the GoPro ecosystem and a normal tripod
- Enduro battery is rated to keep full camera functionality down to 14°F (-10°C)
- Replaceable lens cover, so a scratched lens is a $20 problem and not a $400 one
- 33ft is shallower than the DJI and it is the shallowest of the three flagships
- Anything past 33ft needs the separate Protective Housing
- HB-Series lenses and ND filters are all extra purchases

GoPro HERO (2024)
GoPro
The cheapest real GoPro, and the one whose 16ft rating you have to take seriously before you take it snorkeling.
A first camera, a kid's camera, or a second angle that mounts anywhere
The right GoPro for a lot of families, and the money saved is better spent on mounts. It is the lightest GoPro — 46% less mass than a HERO13 Black — which is exactly what you want on a child, on a hat or on a chest harness worn all day. It has one shutter button, HyperSmooth running by default, and GoPro lists it as compatible with 35+ mounts, so nothing in the accessory drawer becomes useless.
Two limits, and they are both trip-shaped. 16ft (5m) is a pool-and-shallows rating: fine for a hotel pool and a dock, wrong for a snorkeling excursion. And the battery is built in, so on a long day you are carrying a power bank and a cable rather than a spare cell. For a city trip or a beach week with short bursts of filming, neither is a problem.
- Genuinely tiny — 46% less mass than HERO13 Black
- Built-in mounting fingers, and GoPro lists it as compatible with 35+ mounts
- HyperSmooth stabilization at the lowest GoPro price
- Simple enough to hand to someone who has never used one
- 16ft (5m) is a snorkel-adjacent rating, not a diving one
- The battery is built in — you cannot carry a spare, you carry a power bank
- 4K30 is the ceiling; no 4K60, no high-frame-rate 4K

GoPro Sports Kit
GoPro
The Chesty and the tube mount in one box with a case — two mounts people actually use, instead of twenty nobody fits twice.
A first accessory purchase that covers the chest and the bar in one go
If you buy one accessory bundle, buy this one. It covers the two angles that produce almost all keepable family footage — a chest harness for the you-were-there shot that leaves both hands free, and a handlebar clamp for the bike, the stroller, the boat rail and the balcony. Buying these two separately costs more than the kit, and the alternative — a seven-piece plastic bundle off a marketplace listing — is where the slipping mounts come from. More on what is genuinely worth owning in the first five accessories.
- Both mounts here are ones this site recommends individually — the kit is not padding
- Rubber inserts cover the range of tube diameters, so the bar mount actually fits your bar
- The case is the difference between a kit you use and a kit in a drawer
- Cheaper than buying the two mounts separately
- Nothing in it is a water mount — no suction cup, no track fitting, no float
- The tube mount is the plastic one, with the flex that comes with it
- If you already own a Chesty, the kit is not worth it

GoPro Enduro Battery (HERO13 Black)
GoPro
1900mAh, and GoPro publishes full camera functionality down to 14°F — the only battery claim on this page that names a temperature.
Cold-water days, and anyone who has watched a camera die at 40 minutes
One spare, minimum, and two if there is a full day planned. GoPro rates the Enduro to keep full camera functionality down to 14°F (-10°C), which is a cold-morning feature rather than a vacation one — but the reason it is here is simpler. A HERO13 Black is rated at 1.5 hours at 5.3K30, and a day out is longer than that. Buy it with the camera, charge both the night before, and the camera never runs out mid-trip. Longer version: batteries and power banks.
- The published cold figure is the reason to buy this instead of a third-party cell
- Same runtime figures GoPro quotes for the camera itself
- Swappable in seconds, which a built-in battery never is
- Two spares is still cheaper than any power bank setup
- Only fits HERO13 Black and the MISSION 1 series — check before you buy
- Costs several times what an unbranded cell does
- Cold still shortens it; the rating is about functioning, not about full capacity

GoPro Floaty
GoPro
The one accessory that decides whether a dropped camera is a bad moment or a lost camera. Buy it with the camera, not after.
Every single person putting a camera near open water
Twelve dollars of insurance on a four-hundred-dollar camera. No GoPro floats. If it goes over the side of a boat, off a paddleboard or off a dock, it is gone — and a vacation is precisely when a camera gets handed between six people near water. The floaty keeps it on the surface and it is bright orange so you can see it. Pack it.
- Attaches directly to the camera rather than to a mount you might swap off
- Bright orange, which is the difference between finding it and not
- Cheap next to the camera it saves
- Works with the standard door, so nothing else changes about your setup
- Model numbers matter — the older AFLTY-004 does not fit HERO13, 12, 11, 10 or 9
- Adds bulk that changes how the camera sits in a tight mount
- It floats the camera, not the camera plus a heavy housing and mount — check the whole rig

What decides this category
Depth rating decides the model
It is the one difference between the two bodies that no accessory recovers. Snorkeling, boats and lakes mean the HERO13 Black. Pools and dry land mean the HERO (2024) is enough.
A removable battery is a trip feature
Not a spec-sheet feature. The HERO (2024)'s built-in cell is fine at home with a charger and awkward on a long day out.
Budget for mounts as part of the camera
A cheaper body plus a chest harness produces better vacation footage than a flagship body held in a hand. Plan the purchase as a system.
What we would skip
The Media Mod, on a family trip. It is a good product for talking to camera on dry land, and it makes the camera bigger, more fragile and no longer waterproof, which is three steps in the wrong direction for a week near a pool. The honest assessment is in microphones for action cameras.
05
Questions people actually ask
01Which GoPro should I buy for a family vacation?
The HERO13 Black if there is real water involved — it is rated to 33ft bare and takes a spare battery. The much cheaper HERO (2024) if the trip is pools, cities and dry land, where its 16ft rating and built-in battery are not limitations.
02Is the cheapest GoPro good enough for a holiday?
For most holidays, yes. The HERO (2024) shoots 4K30 with the same stabilization family, fits the same mounts, and is lighter to wear all day. Its two real limits are the 16ft water rating and a battery you cannot swap.
03Do I need a waterproof case for a GoPro on holiday?
Not for snorkeling or swimming with a HERO13 Black — 33ft covers it bare, and bare means better audio and no fogging risk. You need the Protective Housing for scuba diving, or if you are taking the HERO (2024) deeper than a few feet.
04How many batteries do I need for a day out?
One spare covers a normal day of intermittent filming. Two if you plan a full day of 4K or 5.3K, or if it is cold — published runtimes assume modest settings and screens off, and real use comes in under them.
05Will my old GoPro mounts fit a new HERO13 Black?
Yes. Every GoPro since the two-prong standard arrived uses the same interface, and the HERO13 Black also has a 1/4-20 thread for normal tripods. The compatibility detail is in are action camera mounts universal?
