How we picked
We do not lab-test, bench-test or dive-test cameras, and we do not own test units. What we do instead is read the manufacturer's published specifications, read the independent reviews that genuinely do test, read owner reports for the failure modes specs never mention — fogging, salt corrosion, cold battery collapse, mount slippage — and then weight all of it for microphones used on lake and trail. Where a number is not published, the page says “not published” rather than filling the cell.

What external audio genuinely fixes
Three things, and they are real.
A voice close to the microphone. A lapel transmitter on your chest records you clearly while the camera is three meters away on a mast. Onboard microphones cannot do this at any price.
Talking at low speed or stopped. A piece to camera at the launch, an explanation at the top of a climb, a conversation on a dock. All dramatically better with an external mic.
Separating voice from ambience. With a transmitter you get a clean voice track and can mix the wind and water underneath it, instead of having both fight in one channel.
What it does not fix
Wind at speed. Above about 15 mph the air itself is the noise, and it hits any exposed capsule. Foam and fur windshields help meaningfully at moderate speed and are overwhelmed at higher ones. This is physics, not a product gap.
Water noise. Hull slap, a bow wave and rain on a jacket are all loud and all at the same frequencies as a voice.
Distance. Any microphone more than a couple of meters from a speaker in an open, windy environment records mostly environment.
The two routes, and what each costs
A wireless transmitter. Clips to you, records close to your mouth, and the receiver feeds the camera — or, on some systems, records internally as a backup. The camera can stay sealed if the connection is wireless, which is the whole advantage on water. The cost is another device to charge and, on non-DJI cameras, a 3.5mm cable into the camera that usually needs a media mod anyway.
A wired mic through a media mod. Best audio quality and full control — GoPro publishes input impedances of 2.2kOhms for standard modes, 47kOhms for powered, and 8kOhms for line in, with 2.5V bias for powered mics. And it opens the camera up: the camera is not waterproof in a Media Mod, full stop.
The waterproofing trade, stated plainly
This is the part that gets missed and it matters more than any specification on this page.
A GoPro in a Media Mod is not a waterproof camera. Not splash-resistant-but-be-careful — not waterproof. The mod replaces the door and exposes ports. On a kayak, a boat or in rain, that turns a camera rated to 33ft into one that a wave ends.
Which is why the wireless route is the right one for anything wet. Keep the camera sealed, put the transmitter under a jacket, and accept that neither the transmitter nor the receiver is rated for submersion either.
Free things that improve audio more than a microphone
Slow down or stop when someone talks. The single biggest improvement available. Wind noise scales with speed, and at a standstill even an onboard microphone is perfectly usable.
Turn your body or the camera out of the wind. Ninety degrees can change the recording completely.
Record voice separately on a phone in a pocket and sync it in the edit. Free, and better than most external mic setups for a piece to camera.
Use music. Not a cop-out. Wind and water are not interesting audio, and a track under a trip video is what almost every piece of footage you have enjoyed actually did — the editing guide covers assembling one.

What decides this category
Does it keep the camera sealed?
The first question for anything on water. A wireless transmitter can; a wired mic through a media mod cannot.
Windshields included
Foam and fur. Fur makes a genuine difference at moderate speed. A microphone sold without one is a microphone you will be buying an accessory for.
Battery life and one more thing to charge
DJI publishes approximately 11.5 hours per transmitter for the Mic Mini, with the case providing roughly 3.6 further full charges. That is a whole trip, which matters because a flat transmitter is a silent one.
How it attaches to you
A clip that survives a paddle stroke or a crash. Magnetic mounts are fast and let go; a clip through fabric does not.
What we would skip
A media mod for any wet activity — it removes the waterproofing that was the reason you bought an action camera. And skip buying a microphone at all until you have tried stopping the boat before you talk.

Questions people actually ask
01Can you use an external microphone with a GoPro?
Yes, through a Media Mod or a 3.5mm adapter, and GoPro publishes the input impedances and bias voltage for each mode. The Media Mod means the camera is no longer waterproof, which is the deciding factor for most use on this site.
02Do I need an external mic for an action camera?
For paddling, riding and boating, usually no — wind is the dominant problem and no mic solves wind. For talking to camera, especially when stopped, an external mic is a large improvement.
03How do I stop wind noise on an action camera?
Slow down, turn out of the wind, or use a fur windshield on an external mic. At speed there is no full fix, which is why most good action footage uses music.
04Is the GoPro Media Mod waterproof?
No. The camera is not waterproof while the Media Mod is fitted. It is a dry-land accessory, and it is the main reason we recommend a wireless transmitter for anything wet.
05Will a wireless mic work in the rain?
DJI does not publish a waterproof rating for the Mic Mini transmitter, so treat it as not waterproof — under a jacket rather than in the spray. The camera itself stays sealed, which is the advantage.
