Action camera battery life, compared
Every published runtime figure with the conditions it was measured under, because comparing them without those is meaningless.

What actually changes runtime, in order
Recording continuously versus in bursts. By far the largest factor, and the one nobody measures. A camera recording for four hours straight is a completely different load from one recording thirty-second clips across a day.
Temperature. Cold reduces usable capacity and makes voltage sag under load, which the camera reads as empty. Every published figure assumes room temperature unless it says otherwise.
Resolution and frame rate. 5.3K30 against 1080p30 is most of GoPro's own spread — from over 1.5 hours to over 2.5.
Screens. The largest draw after the sensor, and switched off in most published tests.
Wi-Fi. It hunts for a phone constantly, and it is off in every published figure above.
Which means a realistic expectation is well under any of these numbers, and the lever you control is the first one on the list.
The cold-weather picture
| Camera | Published figure | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro | -20° to 45°C | The camera's operating range |
| DJI Osmo Action 4 | -20° to 45°C (-4° to 113°F) | The camera's operating range |
| GoPro HERO13 Black + Enduro | Full function to 14°F (-10°C) | The battery |
| Insta360 X5 / Ace Pro 2 / GO Ultra | Not published | — |
We compare only what manufacturers publish. The Insta360 bodies may perform perfectly in cold; there is no figure to cite, so we do not rank them on it and we do not invent one.
Getting more out of whatever you own
Four free changes, in order of effect. Shoot in bursts of thirty to ninety seconds rather than continuously. Turn the screen timeout down to 30 seconds. Drop one resolution step — 4K instead of 5.3K, 5.7K instead of 8K. Turn Wi-Fi off.
Together those roughly double a real day, and the first one also makes the footage better — the editing guide explains why.
After that it is hardware: spares or a power bank, and keeping the spare somewhere warm.
Where each one loses
DJI loses the moment you compare like with like — its advantage over GoPro at matched settings is real but far smaller than the headline suggests.
GoPro loses on raw capacity and on stated camera temperature range; its published cold claim covers the battery rather than the camera.
Insta360 loses on published data. The X5's 88 minutes at 8K30 is honest and short, and no cold figure exists for any current body.
The GoPro HERO (2024) loses outright: no published runtime, and a built-in battery you cannot swap.

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro
DJI
Goes to 20m with no housing at all and publishes a 240-minute runtime — the two numbers that decide a long, wet, cold day.
Long paddles, cold water, and anyone tired of buying a housing to get past 10m
- 20m without the Waterproof Case — double the bare-camera depth of the HERO13 Black
- DJI publishes 240 minutes of recording at 1080p/24 with screens off, the longest figure in this set
- Rated to -20°C, which matters more on an October lake than any resolution number
- 1/1.3-inch sensor holds detail when the light goes flat
- Mount ecosystem is smaller than GoPro's, and magnetic quick-release adapters are their own purchase
- 146g — the heaviest of the flagship three
- Fewer third-party mounts and filters exist for it

GoPro HERO13 Black
GoPro
The safest default for lake and trail: 33ft without a housing, the steadiest footage in the category, and a mount for literally everything.
Anyone who wants one camera to handle the kayak, the bike and the family trip
- HyperSmooth 6.0 with AutoBoost is the steadiest stabilization we can find published figures for
- Built-in mounting fingers plus 1/4-20 threads — it fits the GoPro ecosystem and a normal tripod
- Enduro battery is rated to keep full camera functionality down to 14°F (-10°C)
- Replaceable lens cover, so a scratched lens is a $20 problem and not a $400 one
- 33ft is shallower than the DJI and it is the shallowest of the three flagships
- Anything past 33ft needs the separate Protective Housing
- HB-Series lenses and ND filters are all extra purchases

Insta360 Ace Pro 2
Insta360
The best-looking image of the three flagships, with a flip screen that finally makes a chest-mounted shot something you can frame.
Family trips where you want the footage to look like more than dashcam clips
- 8K30 with a 1/1.3-inch sensor — the most detail in the group
- 12m bare, which clears every snorkel depth without a housing
- 180-minute published battery life and 80% charge in 18 minutes
- Flip screen means you can frame a shot you are standing in front of
- 12m is still short of the DJI's 20m
- The dive case is a separate purchase for anything past 12m
- Fewer mount options than GoPro, and an adapter tax if you switch

Insta360 X5
Insta360
15m rated, replaceable lenses, and the one camera that means you never have to aim while you are paddling.
Anyone filming themselves on the water who cannot stop to frame a shot
- 15m IP68 is the deepest bare rating of any camera on this site
- User-replaceable lenses — the single biggest fix for the 360 format's worst failure mode
- 185 minutes in Endurance mode at 5.7K24, which is a whole day of clips
- Invisible-selfie-stick reframing means you point the camera at nothing and pick the angle later
- Exposed lenses still scratch; lens guards are a purchase, not an option
- Every clip needs a reframing pass before anyone else can watch it
- 8K30 files are large and the edit is slower than flat footage

GoPro Enduro Battery (HERO13 Black)
GoPro
1900mAh, and GoPro publishes full camera functionality down to 14°F — the only battery claim on this page that names a temperature.
Cold-water days, and anyone who has watched a camera die at 40 minutes
- The published cold figure is the reason to buy this instead of a third-party cell
- Same runtime figures GoPro quotes for the camera itself
- Swappable in seconds, which a built-in battery never is
- Two spares is still cheaper than any power bank setup
- Only fits HERO13 Black and the MISSION 1 series — check before you buy
- Costs several times what an unbranded cell does
- Cold still shortens it; the rating is about functioning, not about full capacity

How we picked
We do not lab-test, bench-test or dive-test cameras, and we do not own test units. What we do instead is read the manufacturer's published specifications, read the independent reviews that genuinely do test, read owner reports for the failure modes specs never mention — fogging, salt corrosion, cold battery collapse, mount slippage — and then weight all of it for action cameras used on lake and trail. Where a number is not published, the page says “not published” rather than filling the cell.
The full method, including what we refuse to do, is on the editorial policy page.

Questions people actually ask
01Which action camera has the longest battery life?
On published figures, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro at 240 minutes — but that is at 1080p/24 with screens off. GoPro publishes over 2.5 hours at 1080p30, which is the comparable number.
02How long does a GoPro battery last?
GoPro publishes over 1.5 hours at 4K30 and 5.3K30, and over 2.5 hours at 1080p30, with the 1900mAh Enduro battery. Cold and screen use both reduce it.
03Why do manufacturers quote such different numbers?
Because they test at different settings. Always read the conditions: resolution, frame rate, whether the screens were on, and the temperature. A 1080p figure and a 5.3K figure are not comparable.
04How much does cold reduce battery life?
Enough to end a day, and no manufacturer publishes a percentage. What they do publish is an operating range — DJI states -20°C for the camera, GoPro states 14°F for the Enduro battery. Keep spares warm.
05What is the single best way to make the battery last longer?
Stop recording continuously. Thirty to ninety second bursts roughly double a real day and improve the footage at the same time.
